Catamaran

Catamaran or boat? It's up to you.

Did you know that this type of vessel has been known since ancient times and was most widespread among the peoples of Oceania.

According to ethnographic and archeological data, a catamaran, similar to the one still used in Polynesia, was the main means of settlement of its peoples as early as the 2nd millennium BC. e.

Connected vessels were also used in Europe, for example by the Romans during the siege of Syracuse.

A type of catamaran in which the floats are not symmetrical, and one is much longer than the other, is called a proa. A sailboat moves only on one side to the wind, so it has a symmetrical stern and nose, which, depending on the direction of travel with respect to the wind, change places.

In modern peoples living on the Asian coast of the Indian Ocean, a catamaran is also called a raft.
